National Crochet Month Cake Cozy Yarn Bag and Free Pattern!

March is National Crochet Month
"For 18 years, CGOA has led events to celebrate March as National Crochet Month. The goal is to promote the art of crochet and engage enthusiasts and master crocheters alike."
They will be hosting CAL projects... and I was inspired to create a Pay it Forward Random Act of Kindness for us all to participate in and bring some light on this fantastic organization and their work to make crochet a household name. Besides, it's a fun way to be generous!

So... it begins with a gift.

You will receive a Cake Cozy (or you can call it a ball bag, I designed it to be large enough to hold a pretty large cake of yarn, and a ball would fit and makes sense to be kept in a flat bottom bag) in the mail or hand delivered to you by a friend or fellow crocheter. In the bag is a ball or cake or skein of yarn at least 130 yards long and a copy of the pattern.
The Cake Cozy is yours to keep. This is your gift. The Random Act of Kindness that your friend has shared with you.

The ball of yarn is so that you can use the pattern and make another Cake Cozy for someone else. That's the Pay it Forward part of this fun project. You will need to add a button to the bag and 130 yards of yarn for the next person, if you choose to continue the project and Pay it Forward. The pattern can be printed from the PDF linked below.

You can hand deliver the Cake Cozy, yarn and pattern to your friend, or mail it.

If you are just finding this project online you can choose to begin your own circle by being very generous and making a bag without having received one first. I started this process with 4 bags and 4 balls or skeins of yarn. Please also tag me @12SquaredCreations on Instagram and let me know that you're originating a circle so that I can track your progress.

It is really that simple! :D You can even supply new crocheters with a crochet hook and an offer of some support and recruit new people to our awesome hobby. Please feel free to ask pattern questions here in the comments below and myself and other readers will do our best to keep newbies supported and empowered. :D Thank you for this idea, Sara.

I'm really interested to know how far we can spread this little act of kindness in the name of making crochet a household name and celebrating all of those that we know do it.

To recap: you get a bag a pattern and a ball of yarn. you make the bag, add a button, a copy of the pattern and a ball of yarn and pay it forward to someone else. and we all see how far we can spread the love of this super fun craft and celebrate being crocheters together!

Please please please... if you choose to do this project tag
 me on Instagram @12SquaredCreations
and show off your work.
I'd love to see how many of you will play along,
and I'd love to see the yarns we all share!

  1. This sound like a great idea! What about adding a hook for a friend that is interesting in learning?

    1. I think that's a fantastic idea. The pattern is mid-level beginner so starting crocheters would be more than welcome to message me or ask the person giving them the pattern and bag for help. It might even open up more communication. I will add a note to the post. :D
